The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words to ensure that the future generation could read them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign ones, like dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's early years were a mirror of Japan's economic development. In the early years of its existence, the company made products to meet the demands of modern and contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products from other manufacturers to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto began focusing on research and development of water-related appliances. It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock group. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of problems. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to give it. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard of '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR that could seem like a complete blunder, but works extremely well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

The new tour by the band includes their most popular songs and rarely played live deep cuts, along with some of the songs from Lukather and Williams the catalogs of their respective albums.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that affected his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. The group, which was missing Howe who was busy with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
