Origins

Established in 1917, Toto's early years were a mirror of Japan's economic development. In the early years of its existence, the company made products to meet the demands of modern and contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products from other manufacturers to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock group. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.

Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to give it. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard of '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR that could seem like a complete blunder, but works extremely well.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to.
